- Pass Class 10 from a recognised board under the 10+2 system with at least 50% marks overall.
- Hold a National Trade Certificate (ITI Passed) from the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT), or a provisional certificate from NCVT or the State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT), in the relevant trade.
- Engineering graduates and diploma holders are not eligible.

- There is no written exam or computer-based test.
- Add the Class 10 percentage and the relevant ITI trade percentage, then divide by 2. Central Railway uses this average to rank candidates.
- If the average is the same, the older candidate ranks higher. If the dates of birth also match, the candidate who passed Class 10 earlier ranks higher.
