- Candidates with a Master’s degree in Geo-Exploration or Applied Geology can apply under either the Geophysics or Geology/Hydrogeology stream, but only one stream can be chosen at the time of application.

UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2027: Selection Procedure & Exam Pattern
Selection is done through three stages: Preliminary Exam, Main Exam and Personality Test. Each stage is explained below.
Stage-I: Preliminary Examination (400 Marks, Objective Type)
- Question papers are set in English only.
- Answers must be marked on the OMR sheet with a black ball pen only.
- 0.33 marks are deducted for every wrong answer. No marks are cut for questions left blank.
- Calculators are not allowed in this stage.

Stage-II: Main Examination (600 Marks, Descriptive Type)
- Question papers are in English and must be answered in English only.
- Scribes and 20 minutes per hour extra time are given to blind, locomotor disabled or cerebral palsy candidates with the required disability certificate.
- Battery-operated, non-programmable pocket calculators are allowed.
- Candidates must appear in all three papers; missing even one paper leads to rejection.

Stage-III: Personality Test / Interview (200 Marks)
- There is no minimum qualifying mark for the Personality Test.
- Candidates about twice the number of vacancies are called, based on Stage-II marks.
- The board checks suitability for field work, leadership, initiative, intellectual curiosity, tact and integrity.
Tie-Breaking Rule
- Higher combined marks in Stage-I Paper-II, all Stage-II papers, plus Personality Test.
- If still tied, higher combined marks in the subject papers of Stage-I and Stage-II only.
- If still tied, the older candidate is ranked higher.
- If the tie remains, UPSC’s decision is final.
Other Important Rules
- Face authentication and identity verification is compulsory at the exam centre.
- Gate entry closes 30 minutes before the exam starts in each session.
- Objections on questions and provisional answer keys can be sent only through upsconline.nic.in, from the 3rd day of the exam till 6:00 PM on the 7th day.

UPSC has announced 127 posts in total — 111 under the Geological Survey of India and 16 under the Central Ground Water Board, across Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist and related streams.
What is the age limit for the Geo-Scientist Examination?
