GATE 2027 Exam Pattern & Selection Procedure
GATE 2027 is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) conducted in English only. There is no separate “selection list” — institutes and PSUs use the GATE score, valid for three years, as per their own admission or recruitment criteria. Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission or a job.
Exam Pattern
- Duration: 3 hours per paper
- Total Papers: 30 (new paper: Robotics & Automation (RA); Textile Engineering moved under XE sectional)
- Sections: General Aptitude (GA) + Subject-specific (some papers have additional sections)
- Total Questions: 65 (10 GA + 55 Subject)
- Total Marks: 100
- A candidate may appear for one or two papers only, from the allowed paper combinations given in the official brochure.
- Only an on-screen virtual calculator is allowed; physical calculators are not permitted.
Types of Questions
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): one correct answer out of four options
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): one or more correct answers out of four options
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT): answer entered using the virtual keypad
Marking Scheme
| Paper Group | Marks Distribution |
|---|---|
| Most Papers | General Aptitude (15) + Engineering Mathematics (13) + Subject (72) |
| AR, CY, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH, XL | General Aptitude (15) + Subject (85) |
- Questions carry either 1 mark or 2 marks each.
- Negative marking applies only to MCQs: 1/3 mark deducted for a wrong 1-mark question, 2/3 mark for a wrong 2-mark question.
- No negative marking for MSQ or NAT questions, and no partial marking is given.
